If you are new to overnight oats, they are oats that are prepared with milk or a dairy free milk and then soaked overnight so they can be eaten the next morning without the hassle of cooking. With so many flavor combinations possible you will have no excuse to skip breakfast!
Because I have been making overnight oats for years and have tried so many different recipes I have compiled all of the questions that I am often asked along with my favorite overnight oats recipes.
How Long Do Overnight Oats Have To Sit?
After testing a batch of overnight oats after 4 hours they were softer but I really feel overnight oats are best after they have soaked overnight. They soften and have a creamier consistency. So it is best to meal prep these the night before so they can be an easy grab-and-go breakfast the next morning.
Best Containers For Overnight Oats
I like mason jars or any good container with an airtight lid. A container that holds 8 ounces is best for the amount of oats in the recipes.
What Is The Best Type Of Oat For Overnight Oats?
So I have experimented with quick oats, old fashioned also called rolled oats and steel cut oats. My vote is old fashioned oats because they soak well without getting mushy but still have a little chew to them. Steel cut oats will work, however they have to be cooked first which makes them not as quick and easy as I like.
Do You Eat Overnight Oats Cold?
Yes! Overnight oats are meant to be a grab and go breakfast that you can eat cold, no cooking required.
How Long Are Overnight Oats Good For?
Overnight oats are good for up to 5 days. Now of course it may change a bit according to the toppings you add. I don't think I'd like sliced bananas that were 5 days old, so just use your best judgment.
Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?
Yes, well sometimes. So certain additional ingredients may not be as good heated. Take for example the tiramisu overnight oats with Greek yogurt may not taste good heated. But most of the time you can pop these in the microwave (in a microwave safe container) and heat for 60-90 seconds. This is a great option for anyone that has an aversion to cold oats.
Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?
Yes, again certain recipes do freeze well. I think if you made a base recipe and added fresh fruit after it defrosted it would work better.
