Why You'll Love Maple Brown Sugar Overnight Oats!

Creamy oats with sweet maple syrup and warm cinnamon is a delicious combination. This overnight oats recipe quickly became our new favorite breakfast treat.

Sure there is some sugar but we are still eating a filling breakfast made with healthy rolled oats! If you want an overnight oat recipe with less sugar and more protein try this cottage cheese overnight oat recipe.

    Equipment Needed

mason jars- a mason jar is the perfect container to portion your overnight oats recipe into, but you can use any sealable container.

    Key Ingredients

old-fashioned oats- also called rolled oats are less processed than quick cooking variety. Old fashioned oats are the best option for overnight oats because they soften but still have a bit of chewy texture while instant oats would become too mushy.

maple syrup- make sure to buy a good quality pure maple syrup and not pancake syrup which is made from high fructose corn syrup.

brown sugar- use dark or light brown sugar for the oatmeal recipe. Dark brown sugar has more molasses added which will have a stronger flavor.

maple extract- is a concentrated natural maple flavoring. This adds more of that maple flavor without the sugar and calories.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

In a large bowl add the oats, almond milk, chia seeds and maple extract. Mix well and portion into mason jars or other individual serving size containers. Make sure to add all of the milk to the oats.

Mixing together the overnight oats and adding them to the mason jars.

In a small bowl mix together the maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon and ground ginger.

Add a spoonful of the maple mixture to each container of oats. Top with pecans. Secure the lid on the overnight oats and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.

Mixing the maple and brown sugar together.

    Substitutions And Additions

almond milk- almond milk is my go to for overnight oats but you can use any type of milk. Oat milk, soy milk and coconut milk are all great dairy free options. Or you can use regular dairy milk, but remember that this will change the nutritional information.

fruit- fresh fruit, banana slices or berries are also a good option with this oatmeal recipe.

    Storage Recommendations

Store overnight oats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. This makes overnight oats the prefect solution for busy mornings. Make a batch for the week for a quick grab-and-go breakfast.

How Long Are Overnight Oats Good For?

Overnight oats are the perfect meal prep breakfast because you can make the recipe and have a grab-and-go breakfast for the week. They stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can I Use Quick Oats For Overnight Oats?

Quick oats have been processed more so that they are quicker to cook than old-fashioned oats. Because they cook faster, they also absorb liquid quicker which can make them become soggier faster. They can be used in place of overnight oats but should be eaten within 24-48 hours after they have been prepared.

Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?

Yes, if you prefer to eat hot oats just pop these in the microwave for 60-90 seconds or until warmed through. Make sure that you use a microwave safe container for storage.

    Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?

Yes! Overnight oats can be frozen for up to 3 months. I would add topping like nuts after they have thawed. To thaw overnight oats, place in the refrigerator overnight.
