Why This Peach Overnight Oats Recipe Is The Best!
Overnight oats are one of my favorite breakfasts for meal prep. I can make a batch at the beginning of the week and have breakfast ready for the next morning. This is a great way to insure your family gets a nutritious meal to start the day.
This peach overnight oats recipe is loaded with peachy goodness, warm cinnamon spice and creamy whole grain oats. It is the perfect flavor combination. Juicy peaches are one of my favorite things about summer! And while they are in season I'll be adding them to all of my recipes.
Equipment Needed
mason jar- small mason jars are the best for storing overnight oats, however any sealed container will work.
Key Ingredients
peaches- of course I'm always going for fresh peaches when they are plentiful during the summer. Because peach season is so short and fresh summer peaches are only available a few months of the year, you can use frozen or canned peaches for this recipe.
oats- old-fashioned oats also known as rolled oats are oats that are less processed than quick or instant oats. Old-fashioned oats are my preferred type of oat for overnight oats because they hold their texture longer than quick oats.
On the other hand steel cut oats are even less processed but would not work for overnight oats without cooking first. They are not recommended because they would be too chewy.
protein powder- I like the vanilla flavor that protein powder adds to overnight oats. This is the perfect way to add additional protein to the oatmeal recipe.
Step-By-Step Instructions
In a large bowl add the almond milk, honey and protein powder. Stir well to get out the lumps of protein.
Once the milk mixture is smooth, add the oats, cinnamon, cardamom and chia seeds. Stir well and then add the chopped peaches to the oats.
Portion the oat mixture into 3-4 glass jars. Make sure to add any milk that is left in the bowl to the cups.
How To Serve Overnight Oats
To serve the overnight peach oats garnish with granola, a drizzle of honey and extra peaches. The granola I used actually had almond slivers, but any granola will work or you can omit from the recipe.
Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold, but I know there are days when a bowl of hot oats seem more enticing for breakfast. You can always heat these in a microwave safe dish for 60-90 seconds.
Substitutions And Additions
protein powder- I love adding a little extra protein to my oats. It helps to balance the carbs from the oats. If you are not a fan of protein powder, you can omit it from the recipe. Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a little extra honey for flavor.
peaches- ripe, juicy peaches are only in season for a short time. If fresh isn't available you can use canned peaches or frozen peaches in this recipe.
This basic recipe can be adapted for any type of fresh fruit. Of course juicy peaches are my favorite but nectarines or plums would also be good.
honey- I like the flavor of honey but you can use pure maple syrup or agave nectar to make this a vegan recipe.
almond milk- any kind of milk will work for this recipe. I like non-dairy milk like vanilla almond milk, soy milk or oat milk but you can use regular dairy milk too.
Can I Use Quick Oats For Overnight Oats?
Quick oats are processed more than old-fashioned oats making them a finer texture. They will absorb the liquid quicker than old-fashioned oats so they are best eaten 48 hours after making them.
Storage Recommendations
Store overnight oats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I portion my overnight oats into individual serving containers like mason jars but you can store them in a large bowl and portion when ready to eat.
How Long Can You Store Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats are ideal for meal prep because you can make a batch and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. This makes for an easy grab-and-go breakfast for the work week.
Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?
Yes, overnight oats can be frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze the oats portion into individual containers and freeze immediately. They do not need to soak in the refrigerator before freezing because they will soak when defrosted.
To defrost remove the container the night before and place in the refrigerator overnight.
