Why These Strawberry Overnight Oats Are The Best!
I make a lot of oatmeal recipes. Baked oats and overnight oats are in regular rotation for our morning breakfast. There are so many different flavors that you can add to oats like my cinnamon overnight oats or Biscoff overnight oats recipe.
These strawberry shortcake oats have a creamy texture and strawberry shortcake flavor with healthy and simple ingredients. I love making a big batch for a quick breakfast for me and my hubby throughout the week.
What are Overnight Oats?
Most people think of oatmeal as a big bowl of oats that are cooked on the stove top. With overnight oats we actually are not cooking the oats but adding them to milk and yogurt so that they soften over hours.
Overnight oats are an easy breakfast that you can meal prep in just minutes and have that ready-made breakfast in the fridge, waiting for you. With just a few simple steps you can have a healthy breakfast option and no need to pull through the drive-thru on your way to work!
Equipment Needed
mason jars- I love using these jars to store my overnight oats in. They have a good screw on top so I can grab and go on busy mornings.
Key Ingredients
strawberries- fresh strawberries are the best and luckily here in Florida I can get sweet, juicy strawberries locally grown at the local farmers market or grocery store. You can always use frozen strawberries or if you are really short on time try a strawberry jam.
Greek yogurt- I love adding Greek yogurt for an extra protein boost. Whole milk Greek yogurt is rich and creamy but you can use any variety.
old-fashioned oats- or rolled oats are less processed than quick oats. They hold their texture better and are recommended for overnight oats.
almond milk- I prefer the flavor of unsweetened almond milk and use it in everything from coffee to baking. Use your favorite type of milk that you have on hand.
Step-By-Step Instructions
In a large bowl combine almond milk, Greek yogurt, vanilla extract and agave syrup.
Chop strawberries into small pieces.
Add chopped strawberries and one tablespoon of agave to a small sauce pan. Heat the berries over low heat so that they begin to soften and release their juices.
Add the oats, chia seeds, salt and agave syrup to the milk mixture while the strawberries are cooling.
To build the strawberry shortcake overnight oats you will need a small glass jar. Mason jars work great because they have a lid that will keep it airtight. Add a layer of Greek yogurt to the bottom of the glass, followed by a spoonful of strawberries. Next, fill the jars with the oat mixture and top with remaining strawberries. This looks so pretty as the juice runs down through the jar.
Secure the lid on the jars and place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.
Serving Suggestions
These oats are already sweetened and loaded with plenty of fruit but if you really want the strawberry shortcake experience you can add an extra dollop of Greek yogurt or whipped cream.
Substutions and Additions
almond milk- you can use your milk of choice with this recipe. Try oat milk, coconut milk or regular milk if you prefer. Just remember that the calorie count will change slightly.
agave syrup- honey or pure maple syrup will also work well in this recipe.
Can I Use Quick Oats For Overnight Oats?
Quick oats are a finer texture than rolled oats or old-fashioned oats. They can be used in place of old-fashioned oats, however the texture will be softer and should be eaten within 48 hours of making.
Storage Recommendations
Store overnight oats in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
I prefer to portion mine out into single serving containers so they are ready to go in the morning but you can keep the oat mixture in a large resealable container and assemble into bowls when ready to eat.
How Long Are Overnight Oats Good For?
Overnight oats are perfect for meal prep because you can make a batch over the weekend and the will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
If you find the toppings are not as fresh being stored for several days you can always add the toppings when ready to eat.
Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?
Yes, even though overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold you can always heat them in the microwave for 60-90 seconds.
Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?
Yes! Overnight oats can be frozen, however it is best to freeze the base without the toppings right after the mixture has been mixed together. Store in freezer safe containers for up to 3 months for the best taste and texture.
To thaw the overnight oats, remove from the freezer and thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Strawberry Shortcake Overnight Oats
Ingredients
- 1 and ½ cups almond milk
- ½ + ⅓ cup Greek yogurt
- 3 tablespoons agave syrup or honey, divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ cups strawberries, finely chopped
- 2 cups old-fashioned oats
- 2 teaspoons chia seeds
- pinch salt
Instructions
- In a large bowl mix the almond milk, ½ cup of Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons of agave syrup and vanilla extract.
- Chop the fresh strawberries and add them to a small sauce pan over medium heat. Drizzle the remaining 1 tablespoon of agave over the strawberries. Use a spoon to stir frequently. The heat will make the strawberries begin to break down and release their juice. Cook for 5 minutes, just until softened and juicy and remove from heat to cool.
- Add the oats, chia seeds and salt to the milk mixture and stir to coat.
- To assemble the overnight oats add a spoonful of Greek yogurt to the bottom of 3 small mason jars, followed by a spoonful of strawberries. Next portion out the oat mixture into the containers and top with remaining strawberries.
- Secure the lid on the containers and refrigerate for 4 hours or preferably overnight. These are best eaten within 3-4 days.
