Why These Sweet Chili Chicken Wings Are The Best!
I love baked chicken wings. I know most people prefer a crispy fried wing, but I'm not much for fried food or a thick coating of breading. These sticky wings are perfect for an appetizer or a meal. The sweet chili wing sauce has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy.
There are different ways to cook wings and with this recipe. Whether you bake or air fry, either method is simple and easy to prepare. They are perfect for a Sunday afternoon when watching the games!
Equipment Needed
non-stick oven baking tray with wire rack- this is the best way to get crispy wings. The rack will elevate the wings so they are not sitting in fat as they cook.
Key Ingredients
Thai sweet chili sauce- is a popular condiment served in Thailand made of red chili peppers, rice wine vinegar, fish sauce and honey or sugar. It has become so popular now you can find it in most local grocery stores.
chicken wings- sometimes called party wings, are the drumettes and flats of chicken wings. These chicken pieces have been separated and the wing tips removed.
Step-By Step Instructions
Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Place chicken wings in a single layer across a wire rack that fits inside a baking tray to catch the fat that drips off while cooking.
Brush the wings with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. You can use vegetable or canola oil instead of olive oil.
Bake the wings in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and use tongs to flip the wings over. Return the wings to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, while preparing the sauce ingredients.
Add the sauce ingredients to a small pan. Make sure to dissolve the cornstarch in the cold water before adding it to the pan.
Stir the sauce ingredients for several minutes while the sauce warms up and begins to thicken.
Then after the wings have finished baking for the second 20 minute interval, brush the wings on both sides with the sweet chili sauce and return the coated wings to the oven to bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Check the internal temperature of the wings with a meat thermometer to insure they are cooked to at least 165 degrees to be considered safe to eat. Because of the fat on the chicken wing they are actually best if the temperature raises to 190-200 degrees F.
If you are wanting an extra crispy skin turn your oven to the broil feature for 2-3 minutes. The high heat will make the wings more crispy.
After the wings are completely finished cooking, place wings in a large bowl and serve with the remaining spicy glaze.
Serving Suggestions
Chicken wings are the perfect appetizer! You can serve these along side other apps for game day or any other get together. Kobe beef sliders are also a great app to serve with wings. If you are looking for something easy, make air fryer sweet potato fries or mozzarella cheese sticks in the air fryer.
Try this peach mojito for a refreshing beverage to go with the Thai chicken wings.
Storage And Reheating Tips
Store leftover chicken wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
To reheat wings in the oven, allow the wings to come up to room temperature while the oven is preheating to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake in oven for 15 minutes.
Substitutions And Additions
apple cider vinegar- is a sweet vinegar that I always have on hand, but you can also use rice vinegar.
hot sauce- I sprinkle a few dashes of hot sauce in just about everything. You can also use a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Just be cautious because these spices will pack a punch.
chicken wings- if you prefer a meatier part of the chicken you can use chicken thighs or chicken breast with this glaze. The cook time for different chicken pieces will vary so make sure to check with a meat thermometer.
