When summer hits Florida it’s time to be prepared for months of long hot days. Sitting by the pool or beach seems to be the only relief from the heat and there is no drink more perfect to sip than Peach Moscato Mojitos. I prepared this fun peach mojito recipe for my mom and I one day while we sat in the shade by her pool enjoying the afternoon together. We both agreed it was very refreshing in the 90 degree weather!
What is a mojito?
So what is a mojito and where did it come from, you may be asking? A mojito is a Cuban cocktail that has become very popular. It is traditionally made with mint, white rum, sugar, club soda and lime juice. Because of these fresh flavors this drink has become the quintessential summer drink. It’s perfect for a warm day by the pool or at the beach!
Of course there are many different flavor additions that can be added to your mojito to make it a delicious twist to this classic cocktail. I decided to add some fresh peaches and instead of sweetening with a simple syrup I used the sweetness of moscato wine.
What type of rum should you use for a mojito?
Mojitos are traditionally made with a white rum. Dark rum or spiced rum have strong flavors that would be overwhelming for the mint and fresh lime flavors. Choose a white rum you prefer because this is the star of the drink and going with an inferior brand to save a few dollars will affect the flavor of your drink.
how do you muddle mint?
When you make a mojito you must use a special technique to release the flavors of the mint. Muddling mint is a process that gently massages the leaves with you guessed it, a muddler! Now if you do not have one of these handy bar tenders tools, there’s no need to run out and buy one because you can simply use the back of a wooden spoon.
Now let’s talk about the correct way to muddle your mint. The key is to not crush it into little pieces. It is actually to just release a few of the juices to give the mint flavor and aroma. So do not cut it with a knife or crush to little pieces, the leaves should be intact. I also add my peaches or whatever fruit I am using to muddle along side the mint.
Add the mint, peaches and a splash of soda water to the bottom of your glass and use your muddler or spoon to gently rub the ingredients against the glass.
How do I make a peach mojito?
Making a peach mojito is just one extra step from the traditional mojito. You will need to muddle a few of those peach slices in the bottom of the glass with the mint. Then in a shaker add your rum, Moscato, lime juice and ice. Give this a few vigorous shakes and pour into your glasses. Add a little club soda and a few extra peach slices. Give your mojito a good stir, top with a mint sprig and it's ready to enjoy!
