    • The flavor gets better as it sits in the fridge, making it perfect as a make-ahead.

    Equipment Needed

You won't need anything fancy for this easy, authentic tzatziki sauce; just a few basic kitchen tools:

    • Food processor or box grater (for cucumber).
    • Paper towels or a clean kitchen towel (to squeeze out the cucumber moisture)
    • Medium mixing bowl
    • Microplane or fine grater (for the garlic and lemon zest)
    • Spoon or spatula for mixing
    • Serving bowl

    Key Ingredients

Here are the ingredients to make this easy Greek tzatziki dip so good:

    • Whole-milk Greek yogurt: The base of your tzatziki; we want it thick and creamy. Whole-milk Greek yogurt offers the best texture and flavor.
    • Cucumber: Fresh cucumber adds that classic cool crunch. Grating it and squeezing out the water are the key steps that keep your dip thick, not watery.
    • Olive oil: It adds richness and that authentic Mediterranean feel.
    • Lemon zest and lemon juice: The lemon zest adds a bright, fragrant pop, and the juice keeps everything tasting fresh and balanced.
    • Fresh garlic: Grated garlic blends into the dip, adding bold, savory flavor that makes this sauce so irresistible.
    • Fresh Dill: This herb is the key to making tzatziki. Best to use fresh; it makes a noticeable difference from the dried.
    • Salt: Just a pinch to enhance the overall flavor.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Start by grating half a cup of cucumber using the large holes on your box grater. Transfer the grated cucumber to a few layers of paper towels and squeeze firmly to remove as much moisture as possible. This step is important for keeping your dip thick and creamy.

Next, add your whole milk Greek yogurt to a medium serving bowl. If there's a liquid on top of the yogurt, pour it off before adding it to the bowl. Stir in the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, and grated garlic until everything is well incorporated.

Fold in the squeezed cucumber and the fresh chopped dill. Add the salt and give it a final stir. Taste and adjust if needed. You can add a little more lemon juice, a pinch more salt, or extra chopped fresh dill if you want it more herby.

Transfer to a serving bowl and finish with an extra drizzle of olive oil on top; it makes the perfect finishing touch.

    Serving Recommendations

This creamy homemade tzatziki is so versatile, and here are some ways you can try when you serve it:

    • Alongside warm pita bread or toasted pita chips.
    • As a dipping sauce for fresh vegetables like cucumber slices, carrots, and bell pepper strips.
    • Spooned over baked chicken meatballs, lamb, or fish.
    • As a spread on gyros, wrap, or sandwiches.
    • Dolloped on top of grain bowls or Mediterranean salads.
    • As a sauce alongside falafel or grilled shrimp.

    Make Ahead

This easy homemade Greek tzatziki sauce is a great make-ahead option. The flavor gets even better after a few hours in the fridge as the garlic and dill have time to really settle into the yogurt. You can make it up to 24 hours in advance for the best flavor. Give it a stir and add a fresh drizzle of olive oil on top before serving.

    Storage

Store any leftover tzatziki in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. If a little liquid separates on top, just stir it back in. This dip does not freeze well, as the yogurt base will change texture once thawed. Always use a clean spoon when scooping to help it stay fresh as long as possible.
