Equipment Needed
PowerXL Air Fryer 7 QT Maxx Classic- is my favorite air fryer model that I use daily. If you have not invested in an air fryer for your kitchen, this is a must have appliance! I know yet another kitchen gadget, but it will free up oven space for the holidays and make so many sides and entrees faster and tastier!
Why these air fryer chicken wings are the best
When I want wings, my favorite kind is juicy wings with lots of sauce! This air fryer recipe delivers all of that and the best part is the perfectly crispy skin! These wings are quick enough to make for a weeknight dinner so keep a bag in the freezer for those nights you have a chicken wing craving!
Key Ingredients
frozen raw chicken wings- look for these in the freezer section of your local grocery store. No need to defrost first, which is what makes this such an quick and easy meal.
homemade poultry seasoning- you can buy a premade poultry seasoning mix or make your own using ingredients you already have in your pantry. My mix is dried sage, rosemary, salt and pepper.
olive oil spray- olive oil is the recommended oil for your air fryer. Do not use cooking spray!
sauce- use your favorite wing sauce! These are tossed in sauce after they are cooked so it can be anything from barbecue, teriyaki to this hot honey sauce!
Of course the wings are the most important part of this recipe. I buy frozen wings that are individually frozen so that I can cook what I want, reseal the bag and return to the freezer. Also check the packaging that they are not precooked wings. Precooked will work in the air fryer, however that will change the cook time.
For the spices you can use your favorite dry rub or mix together my homemade poultry seasoning.
Step by Step Instructions
First, place the wings in the bottom of the basket in a single layer. It's important that they are not overlapping so that they cook evenly. Do not add anything to the wings because in their frozen state the spices and sauce will not stick well. Set the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and set the timer for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes in the air fryer remove the basket and lightly spray with olive oil. Sprinkle the seasoning on the wings, flipping with tongs to get both sides. Return the basket to the air fryer and set the time for an additional 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes remove the air fryer basket from the air fryer and test with a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature reads 165 degrees.
Now you can toss the wings with your favorite sauce! This is great if you have a family that has different preference. My family is a fan of tangy wing sauce but there are many different types you can try.
Expert tips
- Do not use cooking spray in an air fryer because it can damage the basket. It is best to use an olive oil spray.
- Do not season the wings while frozen. The seasoning will not stick well. Season once they have cooked for 10 minutes.
- After cooking the wings check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer to read 165 degrees which is recommended by the USDA.
What to serve with wings
Plate the wings with celery sticks and your favorite dipping sauce. Blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing are usually the favorites for wings.
The best side dishes to serve with wings are French fries or even my favorite Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries.
Chips and salsa is also a great appetizer to serve with wings. Try this fun grilled corn and mango salsa recipe for something a little different. Or another dip recipe my friends love is this Black Bean and Corn Feta Cheese Dip.
variations
When you are selecting your wings there are so many different options at the grocery store and they will all work in the air fryer, the cooking time will just need to be adjusted slightly.
- Fresh chicken wings- these are wings not frozen so it may take a few less minutes. Check with a meat thermometer to make sure they are cooked to the recommended 165 degrees for poultry.
- Breaded and seasoned wings- are an option as well. This will work in the air fryer and you will not need any of the additional sauces or spices. I Like the option of seasoning to my families preferences so I prefer the naked wings.
There are many different sauces that you can buy at the store and have on hand to toss you wings in. Here's just a few ideas or use you favorite wing sauce.
- buffalo wing sauce
- bbq sauce
- teriyaki sauce

I have had wings with Old Bay as the main seasoning. would I add salt or anything? Love my air fryer. Thanks.

Hi Nada, if you are using Old Bay as the seasoning, I'd omit the salt because it already has a lot of salt. Sounds good! My daughter loves Old Bay on French fries!
