Hot honey sauce has an amazing sweet heat.  If you have never tried it is the combination of honey and hot peppers.  It's meant for drizzling on chicken, cheese and even biscuits.  Make your own hot honey recipe to serve with your favorite meal or appetizers!

Why this hot honey sauce is the best!

The first time you take a bite of hot honey you register the sweet honey and floral flavor of the honey, but then seconds later you get that spicy kick from the red peppers.  It is such a fun addition to add a hot honey drizzle to your favorite recipes!

    Key Ingredients

honey- because this sauce has only two ingredients make sure you get a good quality honey that is minimally processed or considered raw honey.  A great place to look for local honey is your farmers markets.

red chili peppers- the pepper is the key ingredient to making the spicy honey.  Depending on what is available in your area you can use a different type of pepper.  Remember that the flavor and heat level will change slightly if you use a hotter variety like habanero peppers.

    ingredients for hot honey

    Step-by-step instructions

Add the ½ cup honey to a small saucepan over medium heat.  Cut the chili pepper in half and drop it into the honey.  Allow the mixture to warm, not boiling, and then remove from heat.  Let the chili pepper sit in the honey for 2 minutes and then carefully remove the pepper with a slotted spoon.

    Expert tips

You are in control of the heat.  The longer you leave the pepper in the honey the hotter the mixture becomes.

Don't have time to get a fresh pepper, use 1-2 teaspoons of red pepper flakes instead.  Follow the instructions and then strain the flakes from the honey.

    serving ideas

Here's a list of ideas on how to serve hot honey.  These are some of my favorite ways but you can experiment to find your own.

    • drizzle on chicken wings or fried chicken
    • pizza or flatbread
    • biscuits
    • serve with a cheese plate
    • add to salad dressings
    • mix with melted butter to make a hot honey butter sauce

    Great gift idea

If you are looking for an interesting gift to give friends or neighbors, make small batches and give a bottle of hot honey as gifts during the holidays!

    How to store hot honey

After making the spicy sauce let it cool to room temperature.  Store the hot honey in the refrigerator in a airtight container for 2-3 months.  When you want to use the sauce microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to drizzle.
