An Almond Milk Chai Latte is a tea made with a blend of chai spice and almond milk.  The blend of spices are so warm and fragrant you won’t even realize this is a dairy-free Chai latte!

I was introduced to chai lattes years ago because I wasn’t much into coffee.     Although I love my morning cup o’ coffee now, I still enjoy a Chai Latte in the afternoon!

I always like to recreate these beverages at home because the prices for a coffee shop chai latte can really add up. You won’t believe just how easy it is to make your own almond milk chai latte at home!

    What is a chai latte?

A traditional chai latte is black tea infused with spices and warm milk.  You may hear it referred as a “chai tea latte” which is really an incorrect way to call it because chai means tea.

You can use any milk of choice.  I made the switch to almond milk many years ago and love the flavor with tea, coffee and smoothies.  Give skim milk, oat milk or even coconut milk a try!

Because you can serve your latte either hot or iced it’s the perfect year around drink.

Ingredients in an almond milk chai latte

    • black tea bags
    • chai spice blend
    • almond milk- or milk of preference
    • honey or sweetener of choice

There are many ways to make your chai latte.  You can make your own homemade chai spice mix with whole spices, ground spices or just buy chai tea bags that are infused with all of the chai flavors.

There are many spices that are used in a chai spice mix. In my blend I used ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg and cloves.   I've seen black pepper and star anise used as well in the chai blend.

You can make your latte recipe using any milk of choice.  Traditionally a regular milk using a higher fat content like whole milk or 2% is used, however I like to make mine using a low calorie non-dairy milk, like almond milk.  I'm sure soy milk or oat milk would work well too.

How to make an almond milk chai latte

Making a chai latte is easy and only takes a few minutes.  Start by adding water, chai spices, ½ a cup of almond milk and a tea bag to a small saucepan.  Over medium heat bring mixture to a simmer and then remove from heat and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes.

Froth the remaining almond milk either with a frothing wand or by hand.  If you have never used a milk frother, they are a handy gadget that is perfect for making your cappuccinos and lattes at home look just like the fancy ones the baristas make.  But don't worry if you do not have one, follow this easy tutorial for frothing milk without any special equipment.

Once the tea has steeped discard tea bag and strain into mugs using a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth.  Top with almond milk foam.

Is an almond Milk chai Latte healthy?

A chai latte is a healthier drink option especially when using almond milk.  A 12 ounce latte using whole milk is about 200 calories.  By using a low calorie unsweetened almond milk you can save about 150 calories!  You can add a little sweetener of your choice.  I like to add a teaspoon of honey to my chai latte.  You can easily make this a vegan chai latte by sweetening with pure maple syrup or coconut sugar.

    • 1 teaspoon cardamom

    Almond Milk Chai Latte

    • Once mixture is warm remove from heat and allow the tea to steep for at least 5 minutes.
    • Remove tea bag and strain tea over strainer to remove pieces of spices.
    • Froth remaining almond milk with frother or shaking by hand.
    • Pour tea into serving mugs, top with frothed almond milk and a pinch of cinnamon.
