Cold brew is the best way to get your caffeine fix in the summer time. On hot summer days I love sipping my Cold Brew with Cinnamon Almond Milk Foam. It gives that little boost to get me going for the work day. Plus this cold brew recipe tastes great without adding sugar and cream!

Here's my confession. At my core I'm really a penny pincher. Buying coffee drinks was the first habit I cut out years ago when I wanted to save money and pay off my debt. But of course there are those times, like vacation when you have no option but to stop and try one of those $5 concoctions!
It seems like everyone I know is obsessed with cold brew coffee recipes so I decided to give it a try. This was the perfect cold coffee drink, especially considering it was summertime and extremely hot. When it's a little cooler I love a warm creamy Oat Milk Latte but now a cold brew with almond milk was really refreshing and got me going for the day!
How is Cold Brew different?
In case you’re wondering what’s cold brew and how it’s different from coffee, let me explain. Cold brew is a different process than the typical brewed coffee that we are accustom to drinking. In the cold brew process you basically add the coffee grounds to cold water and then allow the coffee to brew for 12-16 hours. It is a longer process than brewing with hot water in a drip coffee maker, however the cold brew has a smoother taste. Using the cold water creates a less bitter and acidic tasting coffee drink.
How do you make cold brew coffee at home?
Now the challenge is to duplicate this cold brew at home. Luckily this can be made without any fancy equipment.
Here's what you need to make your own cold brew:
- large mason jar with lid
- fine mesh metal sieve
- large bowl
- coffee filter or cheese cloth
- filtered water
- coarse ground coffee
That's all you need to make your own delicious cold brew coffee recipe. You will need a large mason jar for this if you do 4 cups of water or cut the recipe in half if you have a smaller mason jar. Of course you will need a few other items for the cinnamon almond milk or if you prefer to flavor another way.
To make your cold brew, add the grounds in the bottom of your mason jar. Fill with filtered water and stir. Place the lid on and leave on your counter to brew for 12-16 hours. I know this is a long time and you maybe tempted to drink this sooner, but this is the best amount of time for the brewing process. Any sooner and it will be weak, any longer and the cold brew will be too strong. Remember the cold process takes time to work but this will result in a very smooth coffee.
Now after your coffee has gone through its brewing process, it's time to strain it and enjoy. I put a fine mesh sieve inside a bowl. I put a coffee filter in the sieve as well just to make sure that I got out all of the coffee grounds. Then once my straining system is set up I slowly pour the cold brew through. You will have a bowl of cold brew that you can pour back into your cleaned mason jar.
cold brew to water ratio
Trying to figure out the correct cold brew ratio may take a few attempts. After doing my own experiments I decided I liked to make my recipe for cold brew a little stronger because it will be diluted with the added almond milk and ice cubes. I settled on a 1:4 ratio of coffee grounds to water. This fit perfectly in my mason jar and was plenty of cold brew for several days.
How to make Cinnamon almond foam
I love using almond milk in my coffee drinks. My favorite is a lower calorie unsweetened variety. This way I can sweeten and flavor to my tastes. You can make this with regular milk, soy milk or coconut milk of course it will change the nutritional information.
Start by pouring almond milk and cinnamon in a large bowl. I used the frothing attachment on my kitchen aid emulsion blender, but it also works with just a regular hand held mixer. Or if you do not have either of these kitchen tools, just use a small mason jar and shake the almond milk for 30 seconds.
Start frothing milk at a low speed until it begins to foam, then turn up the speed and continue until you get a nice foamy bowl of almond milk.
Add ice cubes into glasses, pour cold brew over ice cubes and top with almond milk foam. Sprinkle with a little extra cinnamon!

Can you use unsweetened almond milk?
bobbieblue
Yes you can. It might change the calorie count a little but it should work fine.
Nicole
I love this recipe but my almondmilk gets too foamy and doesn't mix with the coffee like at Starbucks. What am I doing wrong?! I use a handheld frother so maybe too much power?
bobbieblue
Hi Nicole, I try to just foam a bit of the almond milk. Then I hold a spoon on the foam to pour a bit of the milk in my coffee. Then I spoon the foam on top. Hope this helps!
