I love making a fruity margarita using the fresh fruit that is in season.   There are so many fun flavors to choose from but this watermelon margarita recipe is a favorite! It’s refreshing on a hot day when all you want to do is sit by the pool sipping summer cocktails.  With just a few  ingredients you can enjoy this simple recipe in minutes!

How to pick a watermelon

Because fresh watermelon is the star of the show in this recipe, we want to make a good selection and find the best watermelons.  It is a little difficult to tell before you slice the melon but here are a few things to look for when selecting a sweet watermelon.  Look for a regular shaped melon.  Anything irregular means that it may have not had a good consistent amount of water while growing.  The watermelon should also feel heavy when you pick it up.  The third indicator that you have a ripe watermelon is the yellow spot on the bottom.  The larger the spot the longer it was on the vine ripening naturally in the sun.

You can buy cubed watermelon that is pre-cut in the grocery store if you are short on time or do not want to tackle cutting a whole melon.  Seeing the bright red color and that it truly is seedless is worth the convenience.

Another important part to making this drink is to buy a seedless watermelon.  Because we are freezing the watermelon chunks, seeds will not work.

What is the best tequila for margaritas?

There are many different types of tequila to choose from, however the best is a silver or blanco tequila.  It is made from the blue agave plant so look on the label for 100% agave, if you are unsure of what to buy.   Of course you can always choose from your personal preferences or your favorite tequila.

How do you make a watermelon margarita from scratch?

To make a skinny frozen watermelon margarita, you will need to freeze the watermelon.  If you opted for the watermelon cubes, then place the melon in a plastic bag and stick in your freezer.  If you bought a whole melon then you will need a sharp knife and a cutting board to slice the watermelon.  If you have never tried to cut a whole melon check out this step-by-step tutorial on how to cut a watermelon.

Once the watermelon is frozen you can make your margaritas.  I love this easy watermelon margarita recipe because it only requires 4 ingredients! Your food processor or blender will do the hard work for you.  Place frozen watermelon cubes, tequila, fresh lime juice and honey in your blender.  Pulse several times to break up the watermelon and then turn the blender on and blend till smooth.  I found that if I let the watermelon start to defrost slightly, it was easier for my blender.  Also you can add a little drizzle of extra lime juice if you think it needs more liquid for blending.  Once the watermelon is blended smooth, it's time to get the margarita glasses ready.  Don't pour your drink just yet!

How to salt the rim of your margarita

The important part of this is that you have to salt your glass before you pour the drink.  Sure that seems easy but I've been known to forget before.  So the best way to do this is to take a lime wedge and run that around the rim of your glass.  Then  pour course salt, or margarita salt, onto a small saucer and twist the rim of the glass in the salt.  Now that you have a salted rim you're ready to pour your refreshing cocktail!

What is the difference between a skinny margarita and a regular margarita?

There are so many margarita recipes from the classic margarita to my Passion Fruit Coconut Margaritas.   Many rely on lots of added sugar or simple syrup to sweeten.  I love using fruit in my margarita because it really doesn't need much additional sweetener.

I added just a little honey to balance the tartness of the lime.  You could also use a little agave syrup.  If you find your watermelon is super sweet you can leave the honey out of this recipe completely!

How to garnish your Frozen watermelon margarita

Adding a little garnish just makes this such a fun cocktail!  I cut a small wedge of watermelon to stick on top of the frozen drink.  You can also add a lime wheel to the rim too.  Now you're ready to enjoy this delicious margarita!
