Why You'll Love This Red, White, and Blue Fruit Kabob Recipe!

These 4th of July patriotic fruit kabobs are perfect for a crowd-pleasing summer treat. Made with just three ingredients—sweet strawberries, plump blueberries, and fluffy angel food cake—these easy patriotic fruit skewers come together in about 20 minutes. Here are more reasons why this red, white, and blue fruit kabob is going to be your new go-to for patriotic celebrations:

    • It's a no-fuss dish. No baking, no cooking, no complicated steps. Just wash, cut, and thread.
    • They look absolutely festive! The red, white, and blue colors make these striking and require no decorating skills.
    • Kids would love them! Fruit on a stick and angel food cake make these a feel-good choice alongside heavier BBQ fare.
    • These fruit skewers are easy to customize, make-ahead friendly, and still look beautiful!
    • They work as fresh fruit kabobs or even as frozen fruit kabobs if you want a cool, icy treat on a hot day.
    • They are a genuine crowd-pleasing patriotic fruit kabob you can serve at any patriotic holiday.

    Equipment Needed

    • 12 wooden or bamboo skewers, 12 inches long (you can use shorter if preferred)
    • A large cutting board
    • A sharp knife
    • A large serving platter or tray
    • A colander for washing the berries

    Key Ingredients

Fresh strawberries: Bright red strawberries. Look for firm and ripe berries. You will need about 36 strawberries total for 12 skewers. Remove the stems before threading.

Blueberries: Fresh blueberries are ideal. Choose the ones that are plump, firm, and deeply colored. They add a sweet-tart bite between the cake and strawberries.

Angel food cake: Cut into small cubes; this will be the color "white". The store-bought cake saves time and cuts perfectly into light, pillowy cubes that hold their shape on the skewer. Look for one in the bakery section of your grocery store. You probably will only need half of the cake if making 12 skewers. I like to use a serrated knife to cut off the outer part of the cake that is slightly brown for a better appearance.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Wash the berries under cool running water in a colander. Gently pat dry with a paper towel. Pick through and discard any berries that look overripe or damaged.

Cut the tops off all the strawberries. You will need 36 strawberries in total to make 12 skewers, with 3 strawberries per skewer.

Slice the angel food cake into evenly sized cubes, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches each. Try to keep them uniform so the skewers look consistent. And cut of the outer browned edge of the cake so the white shows on the skewers.

Thread the skewers. For each skewer, alternate strawberry, angel food cake cube, and blueberry to create a red, white, and blue pattern. You can do one of each and repeat, or cluster them in groupings, whichever looks best to you.

Arrange the finished patriotic fruit kabob skewers on a large serving platter. They are best enjoyed right away.

    Make Ahead

These fresh strawberry and blueberry skewers are easy to prep ahead of time, which makes them perfect for hosting:

    • Assemble the skewers up to 4 hours before your event. Once threaded, lay them flat on a baking sheet or large tray.
    • Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
    • Keep in mind that the angel food cake will soften slightly the longer it sits, especially if the berries release moisture. For the best texture, aim to serve within 2 to 4 hours after assembling them.
    • You can also prep all components separately: wash the fruit and cut the cake the night before, then thread the skewers the morning of your event.

    Storage

    • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. The cake will continue to absorb moisture and soften over time.
    • These are not ideal for freezing once assembled, as the texture of the cake and fruit changes significantly. However, if you want to make frozen fruit kabobs, skip the angel food cake and freeze the fruit-only skewers on a baking sheet before transferring to a zip-top bag.
    • For the best results, always serve these fresh or within a few hours of making them.
