    • It is perfectly portioned. Served in individual cups, which means no messy slicing and less cleanup.
    • Visually appetizing and stunning. The red, white, and blue layers make a beautiful presentation that makes it feel like you spent more time on making them.
    • Kid-friendly and crowd-pleasing. No one can resist the fruity and creamy layers.
    • It's easy to customize.
    • Perfect for any summer occasion, whether it be a Memorial Day cookout or a 4th of July party, these trifles are always a hit.

    Equipment Needed

    • Large mixing bowl
    • Medium mixing bowl
    • Hand mixer
    • Rubber spatula or spoon
    • 6 individual dessert cups, mine hold about 6 ounces, which is the perfect size for a single serving or small mason jars.
    • Measuring spoons or cups
    • Knife and cutting board

    Key Ingredients

Instant vanilla pudding: This is the creamy layer that holds everything together. It sets quickly and delivers a smooth, rich base without any cooking needed.

Heavy cream: Used both in the pudding layer and whipped topping, giving both their structure.

Whole milk: Added to the pudding to achieve the right consistency. Whole milk creates a creamier texture than lower-fat alternatives.

Powdered sugar: Sweetens the whipped cream gently without the grittiness of granulated sugar.

Vanilla extract: It enhances the flavor of the whipped cream and ties all the layers together.

Angel food cake: Store bought will do. It's airy, light, and slightly sweet. Angel food cake soaks up the pudding just enough to create a soft cake-like bite in every spoonful.

Fresh strawberries: These bring the red to your patriotic palette and a fresh, juicy burst of flavor.

Fresh blueberries: It adds the blue and packs a sweet, slightly tangy punch that balances the richness of the cream.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Make the pudding layer by adding 2 cups of heavy cream and ½ cup of whole milk to a large mixing bowl along with the instant vanilla pudding mix. Use a hand mixer and beat for several minutes until the mixture is smooth, thick, and creamy then set aside.

Make the whipped cream by pouring the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream into a separate medium bowl. Begin beating with the handheld mixer on low speed. As the cream starts to thicken, increase the speed to medium-high. Add the vanilla extract and powdered sugar and continue beating until soft peaks form. The whipped cream should be fluffy and hold its shape without being stiff.

Cut or tear the angel food cake into small, bite-sized pieces. Slice the strawberries and rinse the blueberries and have everything ready to go before you start layering. Make sure to dry the berries well.

Spoon a generous amount of pudding into the bottom of each dessert cup. Add a layer of angel food cake pieces, followed by sliced strawberries and blueberries. Repeat with another layer of cake and pudding.

Add the finishing touches. Top each cup with a dollop of whipped cream and a handful of fresh berries. Refrigerate for 2-4 hours so the pudding can set and then serve.

    Make Ahead

One of the best things about this recipe is how well it works as a make ahead dessert. Here is how to plan ahead:

    • You can prepare the pudding layer up to 24 hours in advance and store covered in the refrigerator. This gives the pudding time to set up.
    • Whipped cream is best made fresh, but can be prepared a few hours ahead and stored covered in the fridge. Give it a quick stir before using.
    • Cut the angel food cake into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day.

    Storage

If you happen to have leftovers, here is how to store them:

    • Cover each cup tightly with plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container.
    • Refrigerate for up to 2 days. Keep in mind that the cake will absorb more moisture over time and become softer, but the flavor is still good!
    • These trifles are not suitable for freezing due to the whipped cream and fresh fruit.
