What Is Nutella?
Nutella is a spread made of chocolate and ground hazelnuts. It was invented in Italy after World War II when cocoa was rare. This delicious spread is now enjoyed globally as an addition to desserts or just spread on a piece of toast.
Equipment Needed
mason jars- a mason jar is prefect for storing overnight oats but any airtight container will work.
Key Ingredients
oats- old-fashioned oats or rolled oats are the best choice for overnight oats. They hold their chewy texture without getting mushy. If you use quick oats it is best to eat the overnight oats within 48 hours so their texture doesn't get too soft.
Steel cut oats on the other hand are less processed so they do not soften as easily. Steel cut oats will need to be cooked before making a steel cut overnight oats recipe.
Nutella- you can find a jar of this chocolate hazelnut spread in the isle near the peanut butter.
Greek yogurt- I love adding Greek yogurt to overnight oats. It gives the oats a creamier texture than just milk. Plain yogurt or vanilla flavor are the best options.
Step-By-Step Instructions
In a large bowl add yogurt, milk and honey and mix thoroughly.
Next add the Nutella, cocoa powder and protein powder. It will take a couple minutes of mixing to get the protein powder to dissolve.
Stir the oats into the milk mixture. It will be slightly runny but will the oats will soak up the liquid and become soft.
Divide oats into jars and top with a teaspoon of Nutella. Cover and store the oats in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.
Storage Recommendations
Store overnight oats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
I like to portion my overnight oatmeal into mason jars or another food storage container that has a secure lid. This way they are ready to go in the morning and I can grab and eat.
Serving Suggestions
I like to serve my overnight oats with fresh fruits and berries. Sliced bananas are the perfect pairing with hazelnut butter. You can also top with toasted hazelnuts for a little crunch!
Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?
Yes! If you are not a fan of cold oatmeal you can always heat it up in the microwave for 60-90 seconds or until warm.
Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?
Yes, you can freeze this Nutella overnight oat recipe. Store in the freezer right after you have made it for the best consistency. It can be frozen for up to 3 months.
To thaw overnight oats remove from the freezer and thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Substitutions And Additions
almond milk- I always have unsweetened almond milk on hand but you can use coconut milk, soy milk or oat milk if you prefer a non-dairy milk. Any type of milk will work so you can use whole milk as well.
add ins- there are many different extra add ins that are great in overnight oats. Chia seeds, chocolate chips, flax seeds, hemp seeds and cacao nibs are just a few possibilities.
honey- or pure maple syrup are great sweetener options.
