how to prepare sweet potatoes for air fryer

Preparing sweet potatoes for air frying only takes a few minutes.  First wash the potatoes in water to scrub off any dirt that may still be on the peel.

Next, dry your sweet potatoes well.  The final step is to rub them all over with oil.  I use either olive oil or avocado oil.  I did not pierce the sweet potatoes because I knew that would create a mess in the bottom of the air fryer as the natural sugars are released.  After my own experimenting I have never had a potato explode in the oven.  However, you can poke holes with a fork if you feel necessary.

Place the sweet potatoes inside the air fryer and time for 20.  Flip the potatoes and cook for another 15 minutes.  Check to see if they are tender and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes if necessary.

how long to cook sweet potatoes in air fryer

I have the GoWise Electric Air Fryer and Rotisserie.  It was a present from a friend and I love it because I can use it as a dehydrator and a rotisserie as well!

In this style of air fryer it took my medium sized sweet potatoes about 38  minutes to cook.  You will want to check them a few minutes earlier to make sure you don’t over cook them.

Always check your brand of air fryer’s cooking guidelines.  It will give you their recommendations for cooking times.

How do you know when baked sweet potatoes are done?

I always test my sweet potatoes with a fork.  Carefully poke each sweet potato making sure it goes in very easily.  I like my sweet potatoes soft enough that I can add a little pat of butter and just gently mash them with a fork when they are finished.

What if you don’t have an air fryer

If you haven’t decided yet to purchase an air fryer, you can still bake delicious sweet potatoes in your oven.  I like the air fryer if I am using the oven for multiple items that require different cooking temperatures.  Plus the air fryer doesn’t heat up my kitchen like my oven does.  Also an air fryer cooks slightly faster than a traditional oven, but you will still get great results either way.
