Why This Hot Chocolate Recipe is the Best!
Sometimes we get that craving for a warm mug of hot chocolate, and after scrounging around the pantry we can only find a bag of chocolate chips. Well as long as you have milk, you can make a wonderful mug of hot chocolate in just 5 minutes! This hot chocolate is creamy with intense chocolate flavor.
Equipment Needed
saucepan or pot - to heat the milk on stove top.
whisk or spatula- to stir the chocolate as it melts.
Key Ingredients
milk- whole milk will give your hot chocolate a smooth creamy texture and richer flavor.
chocolate chips- use your favorite chips, milk chocolate, semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips will all melt well for your hot chocolate.
salt- a little salt helps balance the sweetness of the chocolate.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Heat milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. You do not need to bring the milk to a boil, but just warm it enough so that you can melt the chocolate chips.
Once the milk is warm, add the chocolate chips and salt and stir with a whisk until smooth. You can add additional flavorings for your hot chocolate but this is the perfect base for this creamy hot chocolate recipe.

FAQ
If you are wanting a rich hot chocolate recipe, I would use milk instead of water. Water will not give you the creamy texture that the milk in this recipe adds.
Hot chocolate gets its rich chocolatey flavor from melted chocolate, while hot cocoa is a combination of cocoa powder and sugar.
Substutions
This recipe can easily be adapted for anyone following a dairy-free diet. You can swap the whole milk for oat milk, soy milk, or cashew milk. Check out my vegan hot chocolate recipe that uses oat milk. If you are adapting this to a vegan recipe, make sure to buy dairy-free chocolate chips.
There are many different options for the chocolate chips in the recipe too. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use milk chocolate chips as well. You could also use white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips or a combination of different chips for the recipe. For the best results opt for a good brand of chocolate chips.
