Equipment Needed
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon
- Rimmed baking sheet or large rimmed cookie sheet
- Large bowl
- Parchment paper
Key Ingredients
Corn Chex - I like to use corn Chex in my recipe but you can use different types of Chex cereal. Cinnamon or wheat Chex works great!
Cheerios - This adds a different visual look to the Chex mix but also extra flavor. Why not try honey nut cheerios for something a little different?
Pretzels - You can use any shape or size of pretzels. Pretzel sticks or pretzel twists are both fine to use as alternatives. This is what will balance the sweetness by adding a salty and savory flavor.
Vanilla Wafers - I have used vanilla wafers in my Chex mix recipe but it is optional. I think the vanilla flavor works well with the other ingredients and adds another texture to the mix.
Honey roasted peanuts - This will also help to add some extra savory flavor and the nutty flavor works well with the other sweet ingredients.
White chocolate wafers - These are so easy to use when melting. I like the Ghirardelli brand for my melted chocolate but you can use your preferred brand or any other white chocolate. Why not try white chocolate chips?
Holiday M&M's - The Christmas M&M's help to make this Chex mix look festive. You can use any chocolate candies you like though. Choosing different colors for different occasions throughout the year is a great tip to make more use of this tasty recipe.
Sprinkles - I like to add some extra holiday sprinkles to my Chex mix but it’s optional and not essential.
Powdered sugar - This is what will help to bring the sweet flavors together.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Gather all of your ingredients together. In a large mixing bowl, add the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, vanilla wafers, and peanuts.
In a separate microwave-safe bowl melt the white chocolate in the microwave in short bursts on medium power. Stir after each increment and microwave until completely melted and smooth.
Stir the white chocolate into the cereal mixture. Add a drizzle and stir to try and coat as evenly as possible.
Stir in the M&M's and the sprinkles. Mix well to make sure you evenly distribute the colors and candy. It is best to add the M&M's after the chocolate has cooled slightly so that it does not melt.
Add the powdered sugar and stir to coat evenly.
Spread onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper so the mixture can cool completely before storing.
Storage
Storing the Chex party mix correctly is key. Make sure once it is cooled and ready to transfer it to an airtight container. You can then store at room temperature for up to three weeks.
Substitutions And Additions
- Cereal - You can use different flavors of Chex or different cereals that will provide texture. You don't need to stick to the original Chex mix recipe.
- Chocolate - Add some chocolate chips to the Chex mix. You could also use milk or dark chocolate for an alternative flavor. You could also use vanilla almond bark as a different way of adding flavor.
- Edible glitter - Make the Chex mix sparkle this holiday season with some edible glitter. Perfect for parties.
- Candy - Add extra candies. You can stick with a color theme or just add your favorites.
Do I Need To Refrigerate My Chex Mix?
No, you don’t need to refrigerate. As long as it is stored correctly as suggested in an airtight container then it will keep at room temperature. This makes it easy for you to grab a handful every time you get a sweet tooth craving.
