First, I've got to say that if you are on the fence about which milk alternative you want to try, then you have to give Rise brand oat milk a shot! They have this amazing variety pack that they offered me to experiment with my recipes. I've used oat milk in coffee and other recipes before, but I often thought it would be great in smoothies. Plus with the variety of flavors, there's bound to be a combination for everyone!
I did some experimenting and made 3 different oat milk smoothie recipes! These recipes are all very different, using a variety of fruits, vegetables, yogurt and protein powder. Two of the oat milk smoothie recipes have no banana for those who are not fans!
First, I made a Chocolate Banana Oat Milk Smoothie. Chocolate and bananas happens to be my personal favorite! This smoothie was rich and creamy, with the flavor of the chocolate oat milk really enhancing the overall flavor!
My next idea was for this Very Cherry Oat Milk Smoothie! It wasn't as sweet because I used a little Greek yogurt as the base along with a vanilla oat milk. I liked the tart tangy flavor combination of this smoothie recipe.
My last smoothie idea was more of a vegetable base. This Spinach Oat Milk Smoothie was really good, and had enough sweetness from the oat milk and strawberries! This is a great smoothie recipe for anyone that needs an extra does of vitamins.
oat milk smoothie ideas?
There are so many flavor combinations that you can build with your smoothies. The possibilities are really endless, which is good because you can enjoy one every day without getting bored! Here are a few of the best smoothie ideas that you can add to your smoothie ingredient list. Please remember that the calories can add quickly, so just pick a few from the list!
- Milk- oat, almond, soy or cow's milk will work
- frozen fruit- bananas, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, or melon (again there are so many options!)
- vegetables- spinach, kale and carrots
- nut butters- peanut, almond, or cashew
- yogurt- there are vegan options made from almond, soy and cashew available
- protein powder- whey, pea, hemp, or brown rice available
- extras- flax, oats, or chia seeds
How to make a smoothie
I love making oat milk smoothie recipes because they are quick and something I can drink on the go. The only special equipment that you need is a blender. I've had so many different types of blenders and am currently using a Vitamix. They may seem a little pricey, but they are so worth the investment, especially if you make smoothies on a daily basis.
Here are my tips for making the perfect, healthy oat milk smoothie.
- Make sure you freeze your fruit. This will insure that your smoothie has a creamier texture and does not get watered down with too much ice.
- Add the liquid first to the bottom of the blender. If you are using protein powders you do not want that in the bottom because it makes it difficult for the blades to do their job and half of the protein will stick to the sides of the blender.
- Add all of your fruit, and extra add-ins chosen, on top of the liquid.
- If your blender has settings start blending slowly for a few seconds to break up the frozen fruit. Stop and pause for a moment to allow the ingredients to resettle and then blend again until smooth.
- Make this to your liking. Some people like more ice, more liquid or sweeter. You can adjust a smoothie to your preferences. I've been making these for so many years, I really just "eye ball" the ingredients, and throw them in the blender. Play around with different recipes and see what works for you!
BenEfits to drinking smoothies
If you find that you don't normally eat enough fruits and vegetables, adding a smoothie to your diet will certainly help you increase your intake. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is very important because we get so many vitamins and nutrients from them. You can drink an oat milk smoothie for weight loss as long as this replaces a meal and doesn't accompany the meal. You want to always look at the overall calories that you consume in the day when weight loss is your goal.
Why is oat milk so popular?
There are so many options for milk alternatives these days. Perhaps you are like me staring at the shelves trying to make a decision? Oat milk has become increasingly popular because it’s perfect for someone that is eating a plant based diet or has allergies to other types of milk alternatives. I personally like the mild flavor that has a naturally sweet taste. It is perfect in my coffee, smoothies and even baked goods.
Oat Milk benefits
- high in fiber
- high in vitamins
- cholesterol free
- great for people with allergies
- lactose, nut, soy and gluten free (check packaging)
Does oat milk need to be refrigerated after opening?
There are many brands of oat milk, so my best advice is to always read the packaging. From my experience there are brands that are shelf stable, which means that it can be stored in your pantry until opened. Then it requires refrigeration. It is usually best to use oat milk within a week of opening.
