Making a fruit salad seems too easy. Sometimes I worry that taking this too a friends for a cook-out or pool party is taking the easy way out. You can’t really call this cooking! But let’s face it there's a lot of great advantages to taking this healthy salad. For starters it's so quick and easy you can have it ready in about 10 minutes with no cooking or turning on a hot stove. Also it's so easy to transport, all you need is a large bowl with a lid!
My favorite reason for bringing this salad is that it is a healthy option! So many times I go to cook-outs and there are so many chips and dips and nothing that is fresh. Trust me I've had other women thank me for bringing something healthy! It's summer and here in Florida we are all trying to look our best in our swimwear.
Is fruit salad healthy?
Fruit salad can be a terrific healthy choice. Notice I say can be because so many recipes add lots of extra sugar, cream cheese, pudding or cool whip. I like the fruit to be the star of this recipe. The honey lime fruit salad dressing just has a tablespoon of honey to enhance the flavors!
What is the best type of fruit for fruit salad?
You can use any type of fruit for fruit salad. I always try to use different flavor and texture combination. Plus using many different colors will also make a fruit salad recipe visually appealing. We eat with our eyes first, right?!
Here’s what I used in my fruit salad with honey lime:
Fruit
- pineapple
- strawberries
- grapes
- peaches
- cantaloupe
- honey dew
- apples
Dressing
- lime zest
- lime juice
- honey
- grand mariner *optional
Of course there’s so many types of fruit you can choose from - blueberries, cherries, watermelon, kiwi, plums, oranges, raspberries and blackberries.
Tips for making fruit salad
Try to pick fruit that is in season where you live. Your local farmers market is a great resource for finding the freshest in season produce in your area!
Here’s another great tip if you want to make a small fruit salad and do not want to buy an entire melon: buy pre-cut fruit. Many grocery stores sell a half or a chunk of melon which will help you save time with cutting and not buying more than you can eat at one time.
How do you keep fruit salad from turning brown?
Adding acid from citrus fruit is the best defense from browning fruit. I actually remember this from back when my mom packed my lunch- way before those sliced apple packages came around. She would slice my apple and squeeze a little lemon juice on them.
The honey lime dressing for fruit salad does double duty in this recipe. It gives amazing flavor from the honey, lime juice and the grand mariner while also helping keep our fruit looking pretty!
Of course the grand marnier is optional. I love the flavor and add it to lots of recipes like my Olive Oil Cake with Grand Marnier Berries and Mascarpone Cream or my favorite drink Passion Fruit Coconut Margaritas. But if you do not have this liqueur on hand just add an extra tablespoon of lime juice.
How long will honey lime fruit salad last?
Fresh fruit salad is best eaten within 2-3 days, especially once the dressing is added. I like to add the dressing right away to help keep the apples from browning. But the acid from the lime juice will also start to break down softer fruit like sliced peaches and strawberries.
You could always throw any left over fruit in the blender to make a smoothie or protein shake, if it gets a little too soft.
