Forecasters say the storm could bring everything from ice and freezing rain in the South to more than a foot of snow in the Plains and Northeast, plus dangerously cold temperatures.

To stay safe and comfortable if travel becomes impossible or power goes out, here’s what emergency preparedness agencies recommend you have on hand:

    Food & Water Essentials

Stock up on non-perishable, easy-to-eat foods that don’t require refrigeration or cooking:

    • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, and vegetables
    • Protein or fruit bars and peanut butter
    • Dried goods like cereal or granola
    • Comfort foods to keep morale up
    • Special-diet foods (for allergies, nursing mothers, infants, older adults)
    • Pet food
    • Water — aim for at least one gallon per person per day (more if children or nursing adults are in your home)
    • Medications, vitamins, and necessary supplements
👉 FEMA suggests planning for about two weeks’ worth of food and bottled water.

    Household Supplies You Shouldn’t Skip

In addition to food and water, keep these items in an easily accessible spot in your home:

    • Warm clothing (hats, gloves, boots) and blankets
    • First-aid kit and hygiene products
    • Manual can opener and disposable dishware
    • Flashlights and extra batteries
    • Battery-powered radio and extra device batteries
    • Snow shovel and ice melt
    • Working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

    Quick Safety Tips

    • Keep fridge and freezer doors closed if the power goes out, food can stay cold for hours if sealed.
    • Throw out any food that’s been above 40°F for more than 2 hours.
    • Create a small emergency kit with spare batteries, identification copies, cash, maps, and comfort items for kids or pets.

Being prepared ahead of time can make all the difference when a winter storm hits. Stock the essentials now so you and your family stay safe, warm, and ready.
