I love fresh, air fryer roasted asparagus.  It’s the perfect side dish to serve with chicken or fish.  I always make extra for meal prep during the week.  Fresh asparagus requires very little prep work and it goes well with your main course.

How to select the perfect asparugus stalks

Asparagus comes in many sizes ranging from thin to thick stalks.  It is a misconception that the thick asparagus stalks are not as flavorful.  It has more to do with how fresh the asparagus is and the cooking method, but whether you go with a thin or thick variety they should both be flavorful.

    How to clean asparagus

Asparagus stalks grow up from the ground with the flower end being the more tender and the woody part being on the tough side.  You can eat the entire stalk, but you will want to remove the tough woody ends first.  Some people cut theirs but I was taught years ago (from my mom) to actually break the ends of the asparagus off.  When you bend the asparagus at the woody end, it will snap at the exact spot that is tough.

Next wash your asparagus under cold water.  Then pat dry with paper towels being careful not to damage the tender ends.  Now your asparagus is ready to cook.

how to cook ASPARAGUS in air fryer

Don’t be nervous to use aluminum foil in an air fryer.  Foil can be used just like in a regular oven.  The important thing to remember is that air needs to be able to circulate which is why I cut my pieces of foil a little smaller than the wire racks.  Then try to spread the stalks in a single layer.

Once the asparagus is on the foil, I brush with a little olive oil or use an olive oil spray.  I love this Misto oil sprayer because you can fill it with your favorite oil. This recipe uses much less oil than most recipes. Then I chop my garlic cloves and sprinkle that on top of the asparagus.  Also a few twists of black pepper and sea salt to add some flavor.

The reason I use foil is so my garlic and oil don’t fall and drip into the bottom of the fryer making a mess.

Is asparagus cooked in the air fryer healthy?

Food cooked in an air fryer isn’t really fried.  Air fryers rely on the circulation of heat to cook the food.  Because of this you will need very little oil to achieve tasty results making this roasted asparagus a healthy side option to accompany any meal.
