People Are Deeply Divided Over These Foods, Do You Love or Hate Them?

Food preferences can be wildly personal, and few things spark stronger reactions than foods people either swear by or refuse to touch. What one person calls a comfort food, another calls completely inedible.

Across social media, food forums, and family dinner tables, these foods come up again and again as the most divisive. Here are the foods people love that others absolutely can’t stand.

    Olives

For olive lovers, they’re salty, briny perfection.
For everyone else? Too bitter, too strong, and impossible to ignore.

Green, black, stuffed, or straight from the jar, olives are one of the most polarizing foods around.

    Blue Cheese

Fans rave about its bold flavor and creamy texture.
Critics say it smells bad and tastes even worse.

Whether crumbled on salads or melted into sauces, blue cheese tends to split the room instantly.

    Anchovies

Some say anchovies add rich, savory depth.
Others say they ruin everything they touch.

Often blamed for overpowering pizza and pasta dishes, anchovies are beloved by some and avoided at all costs by others.

    Mushrooms

    Earthy and satisfying to fans.
    Slimy and rubbery to critics.

Texture is usually the dealbreaker here — even people who like the flavor admit mushrooms can be hard to love.

    Cilantro

    This one is famously divisive.

Many people love its fresh, citrusy taste. Others say it tastes like soap — and once you taste it that way, there’s no going back.

    Cottage Cheese

    Protein-packed and nostalgic for some.
    Lumpy and off-putting for others.

Texture again plays a huge role, making cottage cheese a love-it-or-hate-it staple.

    Liver

Often praised for its nutritional value and traditional appeal.
Frequently criticized for its strong taste and smell.

Even among adventurous eaters, liver can be a hard sell.

    Oysters

    Luxury delicacy to fans.
Slimy and unsettling to everyone else.

Raw oysters, in particular, tend to provoke very strong reactions, good and bad.

    Mayonnaise

Creamy and essential to some sandwiches.
    Completely unnecessary to others.

Few condiments inspire more heated opinions than mayo.

    Black Licorice

    Sweet and nostalgic for fans.
    Medicinal-tasting for critics.

This candy often gets passed down through generations, either as a favorite or a firm “never again.”

    Why These Foods Divide People

Food experts say divisive foods usually share one or more traits:

    • Strong or bitter flavors
    • Unusual textures
    • Powerful aromas
    • Cultural or childhood associations

Sometimes it’s not the food itself, it’s the memory tied to it.

Taste really is subjective. The foods one person can’t imagine living without might be the exact foods someone else avoids at all costs. And that’s part of what makes food culture so interesting.

Which food do you love that everyone else seems to hate?
