I Tested 7 Ina Garten Desserts and the Least Fussy Was Best

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who casually say, “I’ll just make dessert,” and those who immediately panic-sweat at the thought of tempering chocolate. Ina Garten lives firmly in the first category, floating through her kitchen like the laws of baking anxiety simply don’t apply to her.

I decided to put that calm confidence to the test by making eight of her most popular desserts, fully expecting at least one emotional breakdown and a sink full of dishes. What I didn’t expect? The easiest dessert of the bunch quietly humiliating the rest. Here’s how it all went down.

    Coconut Cupcakes

These cupcakes arrive fully dressed for attention. There’s coconut in the batter, coconut on top, and coconut absolutely everywhere by the time you’re done. They’re fluffy, sweet, and aggressively cheerful, the dessert equivalent of someone who loves themed parties. Making them felt like a commitment, especially once the frosting and topping entered the picture, but the payoff is undeniable.

Every bite tastes like a beach vacation that required multiple bowls and a very forgiving mindset. They’re crowd-pleasers in the loudest way possible, though I did find coconut in places coconut should never be. Worth it, but only if you’re emotionally prepared.

    Apple Pie

This is classic comfort food with very strong opinions. Rolling out dough always feels like a personal test of patience, and this pie definitely watched me struggle with quiet judgment. The filling, however, was everything you want: warm, cinnamon-y, and nostalgic in a way that makes you want to talk about fall even if it’s still summer.

Once baked, it looked like it belonged on a magazine cover, which was shocking given the chaos that preceded it. Eating it felt rewarding, like I’d earned the right to sit down. Still, this one demands time, focus, and the acceptance that flour will be everywhere.

    Lemon Yogurt Cake

This one feels like it belongs on a sunny windowsill with a linen napkin nearby. It’s the kind of cake that whispers, “I’m not too sweet,” while absolutely being sweet enough to disappear slice by slice. The lemon flavor is bright but not aggressive, and the yogurt gives it that soft, tender crumb that makes you keep “just checking” the texture with another bite.

Making it felt deceptively calm, like nothing was really happening, which somehow made it more dangerous. Suddenly, the cake was gone, and I couldn’t fully explain how. It’s humble, unfussy, and gives off strong “served with coffee at 4 p.m.” energy in the best possible way.

    Panna Cotta

Panna cotta has a reputation for being fancy, but this one quietly disproves that while still acting superior. It’s smooth, creamy, and feels like something you’d be charged extra for just because it’s served in a glass. The process itself is oddly low-stress, which feels suspicious given how elegant the final result looks.

There’s something deeply satisfying about unmolding it successfully, like you’ve pulled off a magic trick in your own kitchen. Eating it feels calm and indulgent at the same time, the dessert version of lowering your shoulders after a long day. It’s subtle, confident, and knows it doesn’t need to shout.

    Peach Crisp

This dessert has strong “I threw this together” energy while secretly being very impressive. The fruit does most of the work, bubbling away underneath a buttery, golden topping that looks rustic in an intentional way. Making it felt relaxed, almost suspiciously so, like I was skipping steps without consequences.

Once baked, the smell alone made it feel like I’d unlocked a core memory. Every spoonful was warm, cozy, and vaguely virtuous because fruit was involved. It’s the kind of dessert that disappears quickly and leaves everyone asking if there’s more, even though they already know the answer.

    Brownies

These brownies do not mess around. They’re dense, rich, and unapologetically intense, the kind of dessert that makes you pause mid-bite and reassess your commitment. Making them is straightforward, but the payoff is dramatic.

The tops crackle just enough to signal something serious is happening underneath, and the centers stay fudgy in a way that feels almost aggressive. Cutting into them felt ceremonial, and eating them felt like a decision I stood by wholeheartedly. They’re not here to be polite or share the spotlight. These brownies want your full attention and will absolutely get it.

    Chocolate Peanut Butter Icebox Cake

This is the one. No oven. No complicated steps. Just layers, patience, and a refrigerator doing all the heavy lifting. Assembling it felt almost too easy, like I was missing something important. Then I sliced into it.

The cookies had softened into perfect cake-like layers, the filling was creamy and rich, and the whole thing tasted like effort had been involved. It was dangerously good for something that required so little from me emotionally or physically. This dessert quietly walked in, did everything right, and left the others questioning their life choices.

After baking, chilling, frosting, and occasionally side-eyeing my own decisions, one thing became clear: complexity does not equal greatness. While every dessert had its moment, the simplest one stole the show without breaking a sweat. Sometimes the best recipe is the one that lets you relax and still feel like you absolutely nailed it.
