Some of these foods are now eaten worldwide, but their names still remind us where they started. Learning where your favorite dishes come from is fun, and you might even try to make them at home. Some well-known foods were named after cities, countries, or regions.
Philly Cheesesteak

The Philly cheesesteak is a dish from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It consists of thin slices of beef, melted cheese, and a long hoagie roll. Some people add onions, peppers, or mushrooms.
This sandwich is known for being juicy, cheesy, and filling. Hot dog vendors first created it in the 1930s. Today, it’s a must-try food when visiting Philly.
Buffalo Wings

Buffalo wings are named after Buffalo, New York, not the animal. These chicken wings are deep-fried and coated in a spicy, tangy sauce. They’re often served with celery sticks and blue cheese or ranch dressing.
The dish originated in the 1960s at a small bar called Anchor Bar. Today, buffalo wings are popular at parties and sports events and can be found in restaurants all across the country.
Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

This pizza style is from Chicago, Illinois. It’s thick and baked in a deep pan, which gives it a high crust. Unlike regular pizza, the cheese goes on the bottom and the sauce on top.
It takes longer to bake, but it is worth the wait. The deep layers make it very filling and flavorful. Chicago is still famous for serving the best deep dish.
Belgian Waffles

Belgian waffles are made in Belgium, Europe. They are thicker and fluffier than regular waffles, and the deep pockets are great for holding syrup, whipped cream, or fruit.
Belgian waffles are usually eaten for breakfast or dessert. They became popular in the United States after the 1964 World’s Fair. Today, they are enjoyed around the world.
French Fries

Even though their name suggests they come from France, many believe French fries actually started in Belgium. Soldiers during World War I tasted them and thought they were French because the soldiers spoke French.
These thin potato slices are fried until crispy and often served with ketchup. In other countries, they might be served with mayonnaise or vinegar. French fries are now a favorite side dish in many places. They're quick, salty, and fun to eat.
New York Cheesecake

New York cheesecake is known for being rich, creamy, and smooth. It uses cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and a graham cracker crust. This dessert became popular in New York City in the early 1900s.
It’s different from other cheesecakes because it has a dense texture. Many bakeries in New York still make it the classic way. It’s often topped with fruit or left plain.
Boston Cream Pie

Even though it’s called a pie, Boston cream pie is really a cake. It was created in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1800s. The dessert has two layers of sponge cake with vanilla custard in the middle.
It’s topped with a shiny chocolate glaze. In 1996, Massachusetts made it the official dessert. This classic treat is a sweet taste of Boston’s history.
Vienna Sausage

Vienna sausages are named after Vienna, the capital of Austria. Small, soft sausages usually made from pork, beef, or chicken. Originally, they were longer and more like hot dogs.
The canned version became popular in the United States. People eat them as snacks, in casseroles, or with crackers. They’re quick to prepare and easy to store.
Swiss Cheese

Swiss cheese is famous for its holes. It’s also called Emmental cheese, after a region in the country. Gas bubbles make the holes during the aging process.
Swiss cheese has a mild, nutty flavor. It melts well and is great in sandwiches or fondue. Although it’s now made in other countries, it keeps its Swiss name.
English Muffins

English muffins were first made in England, but became more popular in the United States. They’re small, round, and flat, with a soft, chewy texture. They’re cooked on a griddle, not baked in an oven.
English muffins are often sliced, toasted, and then topped with butter or jam. They’re a common part of breakfast, especially in egg sandwiches. Their light and airy texture makes them easy to enjoy.
Dijon Mustard

Dijon mustard is named after the town of Dijon in France. It’s made with brown mustard seeds and white wine or vinegar, which gives it a sharp, tangy flavor.
Dijon mustard is often used in salad dressings, sandwiches, and sauces. It became popular in the 1800s and is still made in the Dijon region today. The smooth texture makes it easy to spread.
Jamaican Jerk Chicken

People often boil or grill them and eat them in a bun. In the U.S., they became known as “franks” or “wieners.” They’re a favorite food at ball games and cookouts.
Napa Cabbage

Napa cabbage is named after Napa Valley in California, although it originally came from China. It’s a leafy vegetable with a mild, sweet taste. People use it in salads, stir-fries, and soups.
Napa cabbage is a key ingredient in kimchi, a traditional Korean dish. It's full of vitamins and easy to cook, making it a popular vegetable in health-conscious meals.
Kobe Beef

Kobe beef comes from the city of Kobe in Japan. It’s a special kind of beef from a breed of Japanese cattle. The meat is known for its tenderness and rich marbling.
It’s often grilled or cooked simply to enjoy the flavor. Kobe beef is considered a luxury food and can be expensive. It’s served in high-end restaurants around the world.
