Halloween Chocolate Oreo Cookies

There's something about a jet-black cookie that just screams Halloween, and these Halloween Chocolate Oreo Cookies deliver that spooky look without a single drop of food coloring. They're rich, fudgy, loaded with crushed Halloween Oreos and chocolate chips, and finished off with candy eyes peeking out of every bite. These are the kind of bakery-style cookies that disappear the second they hit the cooling rack.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 and ½ teaspoons vanilla bean paste or extract
  • 1 and ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • cup black cocoa powder *see notes
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • 10 Halloween Oreo cookies, lightly crushed
  • sprinkles, optional
  • candy eyes, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl using a hand or stand mixer, cream together the butter and both types of sugar.
  • Add the egg and vanilla and mix for another minute.
  • In another bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter mixture while mixing until just combined. The dough will be very thick.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips and ½ of the crushed Oreo's.
  • Use a spatula to stir into the dough.
  • For jumbo size bakery-style cookies use a #20 cookie scoop or 3 tablespoons. Drop the dough balls on the parchment lined tray. Add an extra piece of Oreo to decorate the tops.
  • Bake the cookies for 13-14 minutes in preheated oven. Remove and while still warm add the candy eyes and sprinkles to the top.
  • Cool on a wire rack before storing in an airtight container.

Notes

*Black cocoa powder is a heavily Dutch-processed cocoa powder that has been treated to reduce its acidity, giving it an exceptionally dark color and a smooth, mellow chocolate flavor. It's what gives these Halloween cookies their deep, almost-black color without needing food coloring.  You can use regular Dutch-processed cocoa powder but it will not have the same spooky color!
